I have been making this jewellery since 1983. It all started when I was heavily pregnant with our now 27 year old daughter. I was living in London and working in a studio on the top floor of our house in Brixton. It was becoming increasingly difficult to navigate my way around making my textile wall pieces and it was a hot summer, I needed a sit down job! It occurred to me to attempt to make jewellery out of the huge collection of cast off papers I had kept over the years from commissioned wall pieces. So it began and still continues happily today.
Each piece of jewellery is an original work of art, a miniature landscape or abstract art piece. Unique combinations of design and use of multi media on paper and fabric formulate the work. There are many processes building up the layers of colour through hand painting, using gilding creams and metal leaf to embellish the surface and further emboss them with many natural and geometric designs. The gilded surface is sanded to reveal the underlying colours giving the jewellery a distressed appearance. The beauty of the materials is that they are light weight and become very durable when lacquered, which is done to protect them against most daily rigours. I don't recommend a cycle through the washing machine, although they have been known to survive!
